Paula - 2010

I am sorry I won’t be able to be with you at this year’s reunion.  Instead, I will give you a brief update on what has been happening in my life this last five years.  Myron and I still live on the outskirts of Lake Oswego, Oregon where I continue to teach a blended classroom of third and fourth graders.  Myron ended his career in higher education financial management when he retired from Portland State University at the end of February 2010.  I still want to teach one more year and then I plan to retire at the end of school next spring.

Paula & Grandson Spencer - 2010Our daughter, Jeannie, still teaches high school English in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  She is finishing her Master’s degree in Education and starting another one in English this year.  Our son, Ken, left his music teaching career four years ago and will graduate this year with his degree in Electrical Engineering.  He has just started an internship with the Bonneville Power Administration and is enjoying it very much.  He and his wife are responsible for my wishing to remain homebound this summer because they just gave us our fifth grandchild.  Spencer is almost three weeks old and I am enjoying spending every minute I can holding him.

I have inserted a picture of me with Spencer and my most recent school picture.

I have been married for nearly 42 years and Myron and I have two children, Jeannie and Ken, and four grandchildren, three girls and one boy. Since leaving Moscow High School, we have lived in California, North Carolina, Moscow, Lewiston, and finally Portland, OR.

Once our children were in school, I was able to more actively pursue a college degree. I attended Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston and finished my bachelor's degree in Education at Portland State University. I earned my master's degree in teaching at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Almost all of my 25 years of teaching experience has been as an elementary 3rd/4th grade teacher in the Lake Oswego School District in the Portland, OR metro area.

In fact, my whole family is involved in education: Myron left public accounting to focus his career on financial management in higher education; Jeannie teaches high school English, journalism and math; and Ken teaches music to all grade levels K - 12.

Music has always been an important part of my life and for the past 15 years I have been able to sing with a Vancouver, WA chorus/chapter of Sweet Adelines. For the last 10 years I have also sung with a Sweet Adelines barbershop quartet.

The pictures I have attached were taken this year and cover my two principal activities. The first is cropped from a photo of me with my quartet in performance costume and make-up. The second picture is this year's dreaded "school photo."
